Ketoconazole Tablets USP- 200 mg/Tablet

 

Ketoconazole 200 mg is an FDA-approved antifungal medication for cats and dogs, and an active ingredient that is used to treat internal and external serious fungal infections. It is also used to treat Cushing's disease and dermatitis caused by a superficial yeast infection. Ketoconazole 200 mg is administered one to two times daily oral tablet.

 

How does Ketoconazole 200 mg work?

 

Ketoconazole 200 mg is a medication with one active ingredient - itself.

The active ingredient Ketoconazole interferes with the formation of the fungal cell wall and inhibits the growth of the fungal organisms. One of the drug's pharmacologic properties is to block the production of cortisol and corticosteroids in the adrenal glands. Ketoconazole suppresses cortisone hormone synthesis.

 

This treats fungal infections, yeast infections, skin infections, ringworm, and also Cushing's disease (hyperadrenocorticism).

 

What are the precautions of which you should be aware?

 

Extreme caution in terms of medical interactions with antacids, phenytoin, phenobarbital, theophylline, cyclosporine, and anticoagulants such as warfarin.

 

The following list of dogs cannot be prescribed Ketoconazole 200 mg:

 

  • Pregnant or nursing dogs
  • Allergic to Ketoconazole or similar medications
  • Has liver disease or blood clotting problems
  • Takes cisapride, astemizole, or terfenadine

 

Always be sure to disclose any other medications that your pet may be taking when speaking with your veterinarian or pharmacist.

 

What are the potential side effects of which you should be aware?

Ketoconazole 200 mg tablet's most common adverse reactions reported are vomiting, lethargy, itchiness, inflammation, decreased appetite, anorexia, and diarrhea. Rare effects such as liver toxicity or blood disorders are observed. Taking Ketoconazole 200 mg tablets in divided doses and given with food can reduce the side effects above.
